How to find the central idea when you read:

The central idea is the most important idea, and is most often referred to. Ask, what are important details in this text? What details are mentioned several different ways?

Write down several key details. Now decide on the relationships between those details. Write one sentence, briefly sketching the relationships. That sentence is the central idea.
